Tour de France
Tour de France Photos are now for sale
The photos were taken on the first stage of the Tour de France 2014, 'Grand Depart'. The location was on Buttertubs pass just outside of the Yorkshire Dales Town of Hawes.
The Tour de France set off from Leeds on Saturday 5th July 2014. The riders left the city and headed out to Harwood House for the formal send off with the dignitaries.
The race then headed North to the Towns of Otley, Ilkley and Skipton before heading into the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Here the riders faced three mountain climbs, Cray, Buttertubs and Grinton Moor. From here the route continued onwards before finishing in Harrogate.
The winner on Stage one was Marcel Kittel. It was a dramatic end to the stage with Mark Cavendish (photo on left) crashing out in the final stages. Unfortunately it was also to end his TdF for 2014 as it forced his retirement.
The photos were taken on Buttertubs pass just after the steepest part of the route (which kicks up to a 25% gradient).
British and English Fell Running Championships 2014
Details of the British and English fell running championships, Which will you be doing?
Barbondale Fell Race
A great little video of fell runners descending the final last two hundred meters of the Barbondale fell race. The video shows the runners sliding down the fell, it is also a risky tactic, this is illustrated by one of the Settle runners who dislocates his shoulder after falling near the bottom of the descent. The Barbondale fell race is part of the Kendal winter league and is organised by Helm Hill running club. The video was taken and has been shared with the the kind permission of Andy Holden.
New Ultra Series
High Terrain Events have announced a new Ultra Running Series for the 2014 season. Four races will make up the series. The first of the races 3x3, this is a run based on the classic Lakes 3000's route, this will be a 80 kilometer off road route incorporating Scafell Pike (978m), Helvellyn (950m) and Skiddaw (931m). The start and finish will be from Keswick in the Lake District.
The second race will be the slightly shorter Scafell Pike race, dont let the shorter distance fool you, it's a tough 42 kilometer race starting and finishing in Keswick over the highest paek in England, this race has 1800 meters of ascent.
The third race will visit Northumberland and will be around the forest area of Kielder water. There are some fantastic running trails in this area, and this brand new ultra event will have two route options of 100 kilometres or 50 kilometres. Both routes will be fully marked so no navigation experience necessary.
The Fourth race is one that is already established on the High Terrain menu of trail runs, it sets off from Ennerdale in the North West area of the Lake District National Park. A truly spectacular location for trail running with a fantastic combination of trails in a unique natural environment. It is an enclosed valley surrounded by some of the Lake Districts most iconic mountains; Great Gable, Pillar and Haystacks, providing a natural backdrop of dramatic ridges and wooded slopes. There are currently three distance options for this race of either 50 kilometres, 25 kilometres or 10 kilometres. More details will be available soon on http://highterrainevents.co.uk website.

- Scafell Pike 15 June 2014
